Is Seafile any good? It’s similar to nextcloud, but apparently faster etc.

Mobile apps both have pretty bad ratings on the app stores.

What would you host for yourself, friends and family, basic dropbox functionality is all I need.

I have hosted Nextcloud in the past but it’s a huge program with way too many tools, apps and a complicated way to update, the end result is often a slow and not very comfortable way to use the aforementioned basic dropbox functionality.

I’m a great fan of both. But for a simple file vault, Nextcloud would be a bit overloaded. I used Seafile a long time, but switched to Nextcloud because of calendar, contacts, …
But beside these two options, Cozy and Pydio could be worth a try. Both are selfhostable too. Especially Cozy seems to be very close on the UI known from Dropbox.

I am also on Nextcloud for the additional apps… Deck is nice for example.

But if I just wanted file hosting I think Filestash with an sftpgo backend might be really nice.

I’m using Filestash with a minio backend. Works amazing.
